Fishing is still a bit slow but with the cold front letting up it's starting to pick up. For bass most guys are having success deeper. Try vertical jigging with ice raps deeper in the water table. Drop shot rigs around 30 ft with soft plastics are still continuing to catch fish throughout the winter colors like Aarons Magic and Margarita have been popular. Crappie are still being caught at lower depths by locating schools of baitfish around structure and either using jigs or live shad.

Fishing continues to be slow at Apache... Think deep if targeting bass try finesse jigs such as ned worms with a half moon jig head working across the bottom. Drop shot set ups with soft plastics such as Yamamoto and Robo worms at depths around 30 ft can also yield results. If you like jigging try an ice rap and vertical jig at deeper depths. Trout were also stocked at the East Phoenix lakes so swim baits are not out of the question. work them along the bottom.

Mid January storm is expected to dump more snow in the high country. Gate to lower canyon will be closed shortly for the season but will still be accessible by foot. Road is not maintained so check local conditions. If you're going to brave the weather now is a perfect time to throw zonkers and other leach patterns such as simi seals for brown trout. Cloudy days are perfect and the fish will be active. Remember it's artificial flies and lures with crimped hooks only on the lower section. Upper near the hatchery will still have rainbow holdovers from the fall stocking. Stick to basic nymph setups using copper johns and pheasant tails.

Be aware of winter road conditions best access will be through young instead of from the 260. Fish will be lethargic with the cold weather we've been experiencing during January. Try to find the deeper pools and slowly work grubs across the bottom. Fly fisherman now's the time to throw leach on worm patterns. Again focus on staying close to the bottom of deeper pools.

Water is at winter levels so in large portions that means down to a trickle. Trout have been stocked again in January so fishing should pick up The cloudy days will make the trout more active and more likely to feed on small spinners. Fly fisherman locate deeper pools and holding areas and swing a small streamer like a wooly bugger through the pool. Bass fisherman concentrate on slower areas of the river with deeper pools and small bait fish. Try Kast Masters or a smaller Rapalas if it's a warmer day.
