Fishing Report For Bozeman

Good
Tue, Jan 15, 2019
Fishing is closed between Pipe Organ and the Dam for the winter. Fishing has remained very good lately. Look for the fish to be in deeper pools and runs, where the water is warmest. Midges are coming off in the afternoons. Nymphing with San Juan worms or rubber legs trailed by lightning bugs, pheasant tails, baetis nymphs, copper johns, or hare?s ears can be very productive as well. Streamer fishing is great on most days, mostly using olive or brown patterns.

Fishing has improved lately and is very good. Dry fly fishing has been great, especially in the afternoons. BWOs are the hot pattern right now, and there are some big bugs so don?t be afraid of throwing some of the bigger sized flies. Double nymph rigs are always a good choice, using a San Juan worm or Larva Lace worm above a small scud, ray charles, baetis nymph, or pheasant tail. Soft hackles will work as a dropper as well. Streamer fishing can be good along shelves and faster riffles

PERCH DERBY CANCELLED!!! There is 6-8"? of ice on the south end near the Silos, but there is open water from mid-reservoir to the north end. Trout fishing has been pretty good in 4-12 feet of water near the Silos. Some people are walking from the Silos to Hole in the Wall and catching some nice perch and a few small walleye. Others have found perch and walleye by walking out from Confederate, although the pressure ridges can make it tough to travel from that side. The perch and walleye have been caught in 25-45 feet of water. Use caution and stay away from pressure ridges.

There is 14-16? of ice in most places, although there are some dangerous pressure ridges. One truck already broke through the ice this year. Trout fishing has been hit or miss lately. Ling fishing has been pretty good at night, and will get better once the spawn starts.

There is 8-12? of ice, with a layer of snow/slush on top. The slush, however, isn?t nearly as bad as normal. Trout fishing is very good with white tube jigs, flashy spoons, or deadsticks with bait. Maggots and night crawlers have been working well for tipping your lures.. The NAIFC tournament is this weekend, January 18th-20th.

Fishing is improving, especially in the afternoons. Nymphing is your best bet, although there are some midges coming off on calm days. Nymphs to use would be a rubber legs, stonefly nymph, or wooly bugger ahead of a small mayfly nymph, such as a pheasant tail or copper john. Watch out for ice flows, especially around Beartrap.
