Cold Creek Reservoir is about 1/3 open water with unsafe ice. Some fish have been seen rising but expect it to be a bit slow. Expect winter driving conditions this weekend.

Water beneath the ice remains murky but is starting to clear up. That is improving the catch rate for anglers using night crawlers combined with a bit of mini-marshmallow. Anglers using PowerBait in orange or green also are doing well through the ice. The ice is now measuring between 5 and 7 inches over most of the lake with the thickest ice still being found on the northern shoreline. For up-to-date ice conditions contact Spring Valley State Park at 775-962-5102.

Cold overnight temperatures have frozen most of the reservoir, leaving only a small open spot in the center. The thickest ice is still being found along the front of the dam, but park rangers are urging anglers to use extreme caution when venturing onto the ice. Fishing pressure has been light. For up-to-date ice conditions contact Echo Canyon State Park at 775-962-5103.

The reservoirs are mostly covered with ice, but the warmer daytime temperatures we have experienced this week have caused the ice along the shores to thin. The ice is not safe for fishing. There also are some areas of open water in the reservoirs? centers. If you should venture upon the ice, use extreme caution.

Reports are slow in coming from the reservoir. While the shad have been less than cooperative, they are the bait catching striped bass. Anglers are finding stripers at depths of 65 to 80 feet, with most weighing in at about 2 to 4 pounds. This weekend weather forecast calls for rain. So, go prepared for the possibilities, and don?t forget to double check the weather forecast before heading out. Be sure to pay attention to any wind advisories.

. The ice is 14 to 15 inches thick. Most of the slush has frozen up, but you may still find a patch here and there. Fishing pressure is heavy on the weekends. The best way to find consistent fishing is to get away from the crowds. Heavy fishing pressure in the popular areas in the shallows pushes active fish to the middle of the lake. Fishing is fair to good for rainbows and cutthroat in depths of 10 to 15 feet on the south and east parts of the lake, but remember to walk past all the people ringing the shoreline. You can also go out to deeper water (25 to 40 feet down) and catch plenty of fish in the top 10 to 15 feet. There haven't been as many fish on the bottom in deep water, which may be due to lower oxygen. You can get to deep water fairly close to the north shore, but you should go further out to get away from the heavily pressured spots. A fish finder can be very useful in deep water. Light-colored (especially glow) jigs tipped with raw shrimp or chub meat are producing most consistently. Bites have been fairly light. (01-31-19)

Bass activity slows down as the water cools in the winter, but anglers catch a few nice fish every year during the colder months. The keys are to fish deep (20 to 30 feet down) and use a slow presentation. Finesse baits like Senkos, drop shot rigs and shaky heads are very conducive to a slow presentation. Slow-rolling spinnerbaits can also be effective. (01-31-19)

Trout Stockings took place last week at Floyd lamb and lorenzi parks. Decent numbers should still be available in sunset and boulder ponds as well as beatty. Power bait, small jigs and flies have been the ticket for anglers in town
