The Clackamas has receded to a more fishable state following two weeks of heavy precipitation. Though it is still early for winter steelhead, the big rain event coupled with the actual return of some early winter steelhead broodstock several weeks ago, means it?s not too early to begin targeting these fish.

Fishing has been fair for trout. Winter can be a great time to catch trout, now and into the spring these fish tend to move up a bit in the water column making easier to locate and catch. Resent stocking of the lake is going to help as well in a greater fishing experience.

The Kilchis is a wild steelhead river with no hatchery steelhead releases. The winter steelhead run is at its best on this system late December through early April. The Kilchis can get low and clear, so it fishes the best as the water drops after high water events. It is often one of the first Tillamook Rivers to come back into shape after a rain event.

All of the hatchery steelhead for the Nehalem basin are released in the North Fork, making the mainstem a mostly wild steelhead river. As such, it is a later run and will fish better later in the season - January through early April. Some steelhead should be starting to trickle in. With rain expected later this week the Nehalem may color back up making fishing challenging.

The Nestucca River has two different hatchery winter steelhead stocks, one of which is early returning ,and most prevalent in the lower river and Three Rivers. Some fish were caught last week including the first broodstock fish. The other hatchery stock (wild broodstock fish) and wild steelhead are starting to trickle in as well, but will peak from now through early April. Fishing has been moderately good on the Nestucca recently and some fish are getting caught. The Nestucca should remain fishable, although a little on the high side, through the weekend.

Very few hatchery coho are left in the Sandy. This time of year, anglers should focus on the lower reaches of the river for their best shot at early winter steelhead. Fall Chinook fishing on the Sandy can be very good but all fish are likely to be unmarked and must be released unharmed.
