Fishing Report For Salem

Good

ALSEA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing continues to be decent on the Alsea. Moderate rain has kept the river in fishable shape for most of last week and into this week. Fish are continuing to be caught throughout the system but the numbers back to Alsea hatchery are low. Moderate rainfall and river levels will provide good conditions for the upcoming week. Steelhead fishing will continue to improve as the later wild broodstock fish start to show up in better numbers in January and February. The Alsea still gets a good amount of the early returning stock that peaks in December and January, as well as a later stock that peaks in February and March. Expect more fish to show up with each rise in the river level from now through April. Bobber fishing with jigs/bait, drift fishing, and casting lures are all effective ways to catch these hard fighting fish. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

KILCHIS RIVER: steelhead The Kilchis is a wild steelhead river with no hatchery steelhead releases. The winter steelhead run is at its best on this system late December through early April. The Kilchis can get low and clear, so it fishes the best as the water drops after high water events. It is often one of the first Tillamook Rivers to come back into shape after a rain event. Steelhead should be in the Kilchis, but effort has been light and there have been few reports. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

NORTH FORK NEHALEM RIVER: steelhead The North Fork Nehalem has a run of early hatchery winter steelhead. Conditions look good this week. Fair numbers of fish are showing up at the hatchery, but fishing has been moderate to slow with a few fish getting caught. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

NESTUCCA RIVER AND THREE RIVERS: steelhead The Nestucca River has two different hatchery winter steelhead stocks, one of which is early returning, and most prevalent in the lower river and Three Rivers which return late November through the end of January. In contrast the broodstock hatchery fish return late December through mid April, and should now be throughout the basin. January is a great month to be on the Nestucca as both of these stocks are coming in as well as wild steelhead (catch-and-release only). Last weekend there was heavy pressure on the Nestucca, but some fish were caught. For this week is looks like the Nestucca will be a little high mid-week, but should be back in shape for the weekend. All the usual techniques are working, with the higher flows and some color stick to the larger, brighter presentations. Three Rivers will continue to fish well this week. Fishing has been fairly decent, and Cedar Creek Hatchery has recycled 132 hatchery steelhead that came into the trap back to Pacific City in the past two weeks (70 last week and 62 this week). New fish should be coming in as well. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

SALMON RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing should improve in January as the later returning wild fish start to show up later into January and into February. The Salmon River has no hatchery releases and is entirely a wild run. These fish will start to enter the system in December but the peak is January through March. Bobber fishing with jigs/bait and casting lures are great techniques to catch a Salmon River winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

SILETZ RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead has been fair so far on the Siletz. Fish are being caught everyday but overall it has been on the slow side. Moderate rainfall and river levels should keep the river fishing well this week and into the weekend. January is typically when things heat up and continue through March/April. Side drifting, bobber dogging, bobber fishing with jigs, and casting lures are all great techniques to catch winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019. The 3.5 mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehicles, but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend. Anglers can walk/bike in the road during the weekdays. If anglers do walk in they can park at the one mile gate and start from there.

SIUSLAW RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead are being caught on the Siuslaw system but it has been slow. The Siuslaw has been high and off color but should come into nice shape as the rainfalls slows down later this week and into the weekend. Lake Creek drops and clears much faster and continues to fish well with the recent rains. Both the Siuslaw and Lake Cr. should have good conditions for the upcoming week. Hatchery fish in the Siuslaw system return to Whitaker Creek (Siuslaw) and Green Creek (Lake Creek). Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing, and casting lures are good techniques to catch a Siuslaw winter steelhead. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

TRASK RIVER: steelhead The Trask River is mostly a wild steelhead River, although it is known to get some hatchery strays. As such, it really hits its peak for steelhead fishing now through early April. Fishing was slow last weekend, but there are fish in the system and a few have been caught. The conditions should be fishable through the late week and weekend. All the usual techniques are working, with the higher flows and some color stick to the larger, brighter presentations. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

WILSON RIVER: steelhead The Wilson River has two different hatchery winter steelhead stocks, one of which is early returning, and most prevalent in the lower river, and return late November through the end of January. In contrast the broodstock hatchery fish return late December through mid April, and should now be throughout the basin. January is a great month to be on the Wilson as both of these stocks are coming in as well as wild steelhead (catch-and-release only). Fishing was a little slow last weekend, but pressure was light. The Wilson should be in prime shape next weekend if the weather predictions hold. All the usual techniques are working, with the higher flows and some color stick to the larger, brighter presentations. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.

YAQUINA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing are starting to show up in the Yaquina and Big Elk. No hatchery fish are released into the Yaquina/Big Elk so most fish caught are wild. January through March is the peak for the wild winter steelhead in the Yaquina/Big Elk. Bobber fishing with bait/jigs, drift fishing and casting lures are effective ways to catch these fish. Trout fishing in streams will reopen May 22, 2019.
