Ice has formed in the marinas as well as north and south ends of the lake. No reports on thickness of that ice. Most of the lake still has open water. December is a tough time at Fish Lake as boat launching gets difficult and we await safe ice. Due to the depth of the lake, it takes Fish Lake longer to get cold enough to freeze than other shallower waters nearby. The first safe ice usually shows up by the end of December, though it often takes a week or two more for the whole lake to cap. Call the Fish Lake Lodge at 435-638-1000 before you go to check on current conditions and get up-to-date fishing reports.

Visit the Gunlock State Park website for boat ramp hours. The fish re-stocked after the 2015 treatment to remove smallmouth bass have experienced exceptional spawning and growth. Look for conditions to continue to improve at Gunlock over the next year.

The lake is capped with six to eight inches of ice. The clear ice beyond the shallows is safe (six inches) but has numerous pressure ridges that you should avoid. Also, stay clear of the water circulating pump, which keeps a hole open around it. Fishing in the shallows is fair to good early, but slows down around mid morning. Look for more consistent action in deeper water (25-35 feet). Heavy fishing pressure in the popular areas in the shallows often pushes active fish to deeper water or less fished shorelines. Try to get away from the crowds to find better fishing.
